Derek Eland was born in Cumbria and his work looks at the impact we make on our landscape and built environment. He was recently artist in residence at Carlisle City Council where he is using drawing, film, installation and collaborative working to engage with people about the future of the city.
He is founder and co-director of "Love Carlisle", now an independent arts organisation, which provides a focal point for the arts and culture change in Carlisle and which seeks engage with people in the city about its future.
Derek Eland has a Degree in Politics from the University of Durham and a Masters Degree in Contemporary Fine Art from the University of Cumbria.
He is a former head of culture change at global management consultants Capgemini and has also worked for Saatchi and Saatchi.

Love Carlisle initiatives include
A residency with Carlisle City Council which produced a large number of artworks, such as film, 2D pieces and photography;
Collaboration between artists, performers, bands, poets and venues;
The creation of a website for the project: www.lovecarlisle.co.uk
City wide photography competition with the finalists exhibited in Tullie House in 2010;
Love Carlisle I and II exhibitions involving artists who are engaged in issues about Carlisle or uses Carlisle as a backdrop, using film, photography, installation, performance, sculpture and 2D works;
The creation of a cultural brand for the city and used as the theme for a "Love Carlisle Day" and "Love Carlisle Fireshow" with 30,000 visitors in November 2009;
Work with a dozen youth teams and schools across the city, where artists worked in collaboration with teachers, youth workers and children to identify what they loved about the city and wanted to change;
The creation of a big brother style "Diary Room" where visitors could record to camera or write comments on their views on the city. Over two hours of edited footage and 4000 comments were collected in this way.
